Message: I am so happy to have the opportunity to buy this beautiful heartfilled expression from my fellow earth traveller Kevin. Lucky I am to be here at the same time so we could meet in Tennessee years ago. During years when he went to Russia as a missionary, he spent some time raising money for his family to work there by coming to Nashville and selling plants. He stayed in an upstairs bedroom in my house where he painted the "Snow Maiden". I feel like a tiny part of this book because of that, and am so glad that Kevin put this together and I hope there is more to come. It will take me a long time to scour the pages and find the depth and meaning of the paintings and verse. I really appreciate it and I think Kevin is one of God's special emmisaries bringing light to the world through his (he)art. I thank God for giving him the strength to edit and bind it into this lovely package.

Message: Without much discrepancy, the legends of entirely different cultures relate in close proximity to the biblical narration of the fall of man. As Christian we tend to discount these stories as mere myth or non-Scriptural. However, “Carl Jung the famous psychoanalyst understood these stories not merely as superstition or myth, but as important revelations of a truth far beyond the comprehension of our rational mind. For Jung, these were symbolic expressions of the collective memory of the human race is a treasure of secrets coming from our subconscious mind that tells us about our past as human beings.”

We are all endowed with one or more unique talents; to a casual observer, the art work of Kevin Convery may seem a bit indistinct a dream like event, beyond the comprehension of our rational mind, but for a thinker, the classic myths of the ages come to life in his art work. And most importantly through the symbolic expressions of the collective memory of the artist’s past it provides the observer a graceful glimpse into his Irish roots.

Here is a blissful opportunity, a challenge in itself, embark on a journey into the mythical world of Kevin Convery through his artwork.

Message: I am a teacher of middle school language arts in Reading, PA. I have know Kevin as a friend and artist for many years, but I didn't know he was also a poet! His prose in The Golden Thread reads like poetry and the images are as full, rich and layered as his paintings are. The writing is dense with description and provides a very visual experience even without the stunning color paintings.

The ideas expressed have their own density and give rise to meditation about our collective human experience and human connectedness through time. Fine works of art, whether visual or verbal (and this book has both)serve to awaken the spirit and quicken the mind. I find I must take my time to absorb all this beautiful book has to offer. I recommend it to anyone who appreciates art, poetry, myth, and beauty.

Message: I am a teacher of philosophy at St. Joseph's University in Philadelphia. I found Mr. Convery's book very interesting and relevant to the subject that I teach. The book is itself a genuine work of art. His paintings express powerfully, eloquently and beautifully what Carl Jung refers to as 'the collective unconscious,' and what Joseph Campbell explores in 'The Power of Myth.' I would recommend Mr. Convery's book to anyone interested in art, mythology and depth psychology.

Message: “THE GOLDEN THREAD: REFLECTIONS ON MYTH AND MEMORY”
A BOOK WITH PAINTINGS AND TEXT by KEVIN CONVERY
REVIEWED by JOE R. FRINZI

“The Golden Thread: Reflections on Myth and Memory”, which he self-published this year.
Part vision quest confessional and part art catalog, one is immediately drawn to Mr. Convery’s spirituality and his sensitivity to natural surroundings. He explains through colorful, descriptive passages, which prove him to be as much of a poet as an artist, how his life and experiences have influenced his art. The reader is also taken on a journey through a number of classic myths that have inspired this artist in the creation of his distinctive oeuvre. More often than not in his canvasses, he favors the left side to carry the primary focus (usually a young, idealized female looking directly at the viewer), while the background and right area contain vital clues to the mythic story he is telling. In some works, e.g. “Faintly Through The Universe”, which depicts a young woman playing a violin before an enormous window, outside of which a serenely luminous snowstorm serves as an almost mystical backdrop, Mr. Convery is able to fuse multiple elements into a uniquely satisfying whole. Here he combines his Irish heritage (the title is from a line in James Joyce’s “The Dead” about falling snow) with his time spent in Russia (the setting and image evoke his reminiscence of East European culture), both used to great effect.
As in many self-published books some errors and typos have crept in which might have been avoided through the experienced eye of an editorial professional. Still, the text conveys Mr. Convery’s thoughts and insights in a warm and friendly voice, making the reader feel like an invited guest on this man’s personal pilgrimage through life. Of particular merit, the color plates are exquisitely rendered allowing one to fully appreciate the dense quality of tone and texture inherent in the original works which, stylistically, owe more than a passing nod to the pre-Raphaelite era. In several cases, he even provides detailed close-ups of a painting which further enhance one’s appreciation of the imagery.
One has to marvel at the effort Mr. Convery put forth to produce this very personal record of his artistic and literary exploration of the creative process. At a time when it seems as if “anything goes” in the art world, this eclectic blend of very traditional elements (images and text) speaks directly to the reader about passion, culture and living one’s life with purpose and direction in order to gain some measure of insight. That seems as lofty and worthy a goal for anyone to pursue. With his book, Mr. Convery does this and much more, and he delivers it with a heartfelt sense of grace.
